RSAMD plans name change
11th Nov 2010
Scotlands leading institution of further education for the performing arts, the RSAMD was created in 1968 as the union of the Royal Scottish National Academy of Music with Glasgows College of Dramatic Arts.
According to a statement from the RSAMD: We have, over the past five years or so, extended our curriculum to include film and television and modern ballet, therefore our current name no longer reflects the range of our provision as it, quite explicitly, identifies us only with music and drama.
The academy has been engaged in a review of all of its programmes for the last two sessions, which will result in a new curriculum. It is also developing a second campus to accommodate, among other things, modern ballet and technical and production arts.
Both of those projects represent a once in a generation step-change for us and therefore they add considerable weight to the view that now is the time to re-present ourselves to the world as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, according to the statement.
In order for the proposed name change to go through, the RSAMD has to gain approval from the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. The institution is seeking responses to the proposals from its stakeholders and alumni by December 20. The request will go to Holyrood in the New Year with the expectation that the name change comes into effect in August 2011.
