Hartley is an international lighting designer and theatre consultant with extensive experience of the arts industry in the UK, Europe, North America and worldwide.
Hartley's lighting design work includes designs for the National Theatre of Great Britain and Royal Shakespeare Company (London, Stratford, UK and international tours), West End theatres, Donmar Warehouse, Old Vic, Royal Court, Lyric Hammersmith, Almeida, Hampstead, Tricycle, Bush, Gate, Menier Chocolate Factory, Southwark Playhouse, King's Head, New End, Finborough, Bridewell, Arts Theatre and BAC. Regional UK work includes Sheffield Theatres, Bristol Old Vic, Manchester Royal Exchange, Birmingham Rep, Theatre Royal Bath Productions, Northcott Theatre Exeter, Clwyd Theatre Cymru, West Yorkshire Playhouse, and tours. Opera includes Royal Opera House Linbury Studio, Opera Holland Park, Castleward Opera Northern Ireland, and Queen Elizabeth Hall. North America includes Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional. Europe includes Austria, Ireland, Germany, Iceland and Sweden. Australia includes Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne, Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney, and Bell Shakespeare. Worldwide design and touring includes Cape Town, Hong Kong, Korea, Russia and Singapore.
Hartley is also artistic director of C venues, one of the pre-eminent producing venues at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival.
